Creating your first AI-animated portrait with Incarn takes less than five minutes. This guide walks you through every step -from choosing the right photo to downloading the finished video -so you know exactly what to expect.
The best photos for animation are clear, well-lit portraits where the face is visible and at least 200 pixels wide in the image. Black and white photos work beautifully -the AI animates them just as well as color photos. Avoid photos where the face is heavily obscured by shadow, extreme angle, or hat brim. Group photos work, but the animation focuses on one face at a time; for best results, crop to a single person first.
From the Incarn homepage, click 'Animate a photo' or drag your image into the upload zone. Incarn accepts JPEG, PNG, and WEBP files up to 10MB. If your file is larger, resize it first -anything above 2000 pixels on the longest side is more than enough. The upload usually takes a few seconds on a standard connection.
After uploading, Incarn shows you a preview of your photo. Check that the face is clearly visible and centered. If the framing isn't quite right, click 'Change photo' to re-upload a cropped version. Once you're happy, click 'Animate this photo.' If you're not signed in, you'll be using a free guest credit -no account required for your first animation.
The AI animation model processes your photo in the cloud. This typically takes 30–90 seconds depending on server load. You'll see a progress indicator on screen. Don't close the tab -the animation will be lost if you navigate away before it completes. If you have an account, your animations are saved to your gallery automatically.
When the animation is ready, it plays automatically in a loop. The AI generates subtle, natural movements -slight head turns, blinking, gentle breathing. Every animation is unique; running the same photo twice will produce slightly different results. Take a moment to appreciate what it looks like to see your ancestor move for the first time.
Click the download button to save the video to your device. The animation is exported as an MP4 file, compatible with all phones, computers, and social media platforms. You can also use the share button to generate a private link -anyone with the link can watch the animation without needing an Incarn account.
Pro tip
For the most emotional results, start with the oldest photo you have -a great-grandparent or earlier. The further back the photo, the more powerful it feels to see the person move. Many users say their first animation brought them to tears.
